Decaying Scalars Emitted by a Forest Canopy: a Numerical Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
A large-eddy simulation is modified to include multiple scalars emitted by a plant canopy. Each of these scalars is subjected to varying rates of chemical loss. Presented is a detailed comparison between conserved species and species undergoing firstand second-order chemical loss. Profiles of mean mixing ratio, mixing-ratio variance and vertical mixing-ratio flux reveal the influence of chemical reactivity. Distribution of the scalar source through the depth of the canopy is shown to locally reduce the reaction rate for second-order species. Transport efficiencies, diffusion coefficients, and mean source heights also exhibit chemical dependencies. Budgets of mixing-ratio variance and flux elucidate the mechanisms through which chemistry modifies each. Instantaneous fields show the existence of intermittently occurring coherent structures that are thought to enhance species segregation.

The Effect of the Vertical Source Distribution on Scalar Statistics within and above a Forest Canopy
Little is known about in-canopy processes that may alter forest–atmosphere exchanges of trace gases and aerosols. To improve our understanding of in-canopy mixing, we use large-eddy simulation to study the effect of scalar source/sink distributions on scalar concentration moments, fluxes, and correlation coefficients within and above an ideal forest canopy. Scalars are emitted from: (1) the gro...
متن کاملIntroducing the improved Forest Canopy density (FCD) model for frequent assessment of Hyrcanian forest
Mapping of forest extent is a prerequisite to acquire quantitative and qualitative information about forests and to formulate management and conservation strategies. forest canopy density (FCD) model is one of the useful RS methods for forest mapping using satellite images. One of the most serious challenges in FCD model is the weakness in the calculation of canopy density in low density forest...
متن کاملA Study of Energy Attenuation Due to Forest Canopy in Small- Footprint Waveform Lidar Signals
Waveform light detection and ranging (wLiDAR) records the entire backscattered signal of an emitted laser pulse, enabling deeper penetration through tree canopy. However, due to interactions (e.g. reflection, absorption, and transmission) within the canopy, the full proportion of emitted light may not reach the ground, resulting in an attenuated waveform. Correction of attenuation will result i...

Risks assessment of forest project implementation in spatial density changes of forest under canopy vegetation using artificial neural network modeling approach Nowadays, environmental risk assessment has been defined as one of the effective in environmental planning and policy making. Considering the position and structure of vegetation on the forest floor, the main role of forest under ca...
متن کاملCanopy gaps characteristics and structural dynamics in a natural unmanaged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand in the north of Iran
Canopy gaps are one of the most important structural features of forest ecosystems, and studying of them can have useful results and implications for forest management. The aim of this study is investigation of characteristics and regeneration within canopy gaps in an intact beech stand in the Shastkalateh Experimental Forest of Hyrcanian region, north of Iran. All canopy gaps and related fores...
